On Tuesday, April 26, 2022, a Facebook user with the name, Amebo Hub posted a screenshot of a tweet ascribed to Elon Musk. The tweet stated that Elon Musk said after he has purchased Twitter, he is going to buy Facebook, and delete both social media apps permanently.

The text read thus, “Now that I bought Twitter, I’m deleting it. FB is next. Go outside and enjoy your life.

As of the time of publishing this report, the post had generated 11 likes and 5 comments.

Also, another tweet attributed to Musk’s handle with the same time and date stamp stated that he will buy Facebook and delete it.

The tweet reads: “Now I’m going to buy Facebook and delete it haha.”

POTENTIAL IMPACT OF THE CLAIM

Elon Reeve Musk FRS is an entrepreneur, investor, and business magnate. His offer to buy Twitter Inc. was just approved by the company’s board and his acquisition will be made official after the waiting period has elapsed with any counter offer.

There have been controversies and conspiracies surrounding Musk’s acquisition of the social media platform, hence, it is pertinent to fact-check the claim stating that he is about to buy Facebook too and delete both social media Apps.

VERIFICATION

In a bid to know if Elon Musk posted the original tweet via his official verified Twitter account, News Verifier Africa went through Musk’s timeline to check if he had tweeted such on the date shown on the screenshot, but unfortunately, we did not find anything related to that on his page.

Note that at the time of writing this report, no mainstream media platform has published anything related to such a claim.

CLAIM 2

Elon Musk is Set to Delete Twitter After Buying it.

VERIFICATION

The researcher also checked Musk’s Twitter posts to verify if he tweeted about deleting Twitter after he has acquired it but did not find anything related to that on his page.

Also, the researcher did an advanced search of Musk’s timeline and did not find any tweet suggesting that he plans to delete Twitter as a social media app permanently.

CONCLUSION

The claim that Elon Musk is buying Facebook and deleting it is FALSE, the same as the claim that he will delete Twitter after buying it as the timestamp and date on both tweets are similar.
